Ryan Murphy vs KOL and Slash

The six-month-old feud between the hit Fox show Glee and rockers Kings of Leon is heating up yet again. The Grammy winning band famously turned down the show's request to Glee-ify the song "Use Somebody," sparking outrage from Gleeks everywhere, and now creator Ryan Murphy reveals to The Hollywood Reporter that he's not yet over the snub.

"F--- you, Kings of Leon,” he says in THR's cover story, out this week. “They’re self-centered assholes, and they missed the big picture. They missed that a 7-year-old kid can see someone close to their age singing a Kings of Leon song, which will maybe make them want to join a glee club or pick up a musical instrument. It’s like, OK, hate on arts education. You can make fun of Glee all you want, but at its heart, what we really do is turn kids on to music.”

In an exclusive statement, Kings of Leon frontman Caleb Followill tells THR: “This whole Glee thing is a shock to us. It’s gotten out of hand. At the time of the request, we hadn’t even seen the show. It came at the end of that record cycle, and we were over promoting [“Use Somebody”]. This was never meant as a slap in the face to Glee or to music education or to fans of the show. We’re not sure where the anger is coming from. We just said no to a license for a TV show, which we do a lot.”

Another rock star on Murphy’s black list? Former Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash, who recently revealed that he draws the licensing line at Glee. “Glee is worse than Grease, and Grease is bad enough,” he said in an interview. Murphy’s response: “Usually I find that people who make those comments, their careers are over; they’re uneducated and quite stupid.”

I really don't care which band/singer is in question, RM is just being really immature now. If they don't want their songs on a tv show then, whatever! Not everyone wants to be associated with Glee, jeez. Don't go pout in a corner and act like a spoiled brat. Ugh, he's so irritating.

ry needs to get himself together. he's causing attention to the show that isn't necessary.

This is stupid and seems to have come out of nowhere. Ryan needs to calm down. It's not a big deal for an artist to not want the show to use their music. It's THEIR music. They can do whatever they want with it.

Not wanting your music on a TV show =/= hating on arts education.

You missed what the drummer for KOL said on his twitter earlier. He's since deleted it, but he said this:

"Dear Ryan Murphy, let it go. See a therapist, get a manicure, buy a new bra. Zip your lip and focus on educating 7 yr olds how to say f--k."

Now, I'm not supporting what Ryan said, but this is just as bad! :\

I don't really see it being homophobic. I could maybe see others seeing it that way.

Ryan is being completely immature. If someone doesn't want to work with Glee, it does not mean they are against arts education in schools. It means they don't like Glee. It's not like Glee is the only outlet for artists to support music education.

Whoever responded on twitter from KOL was homophobic and misogynist in his response. Even if he didn't mean to insult gay people or women, that's what he did- he equated being stereotypically gay or female with something bad. He was basically one step away from saying RM's statement was "so gay!"

They both look like idiots.

Ryan's response to tweet:

"Just read Nathan Followill's Tweet…in which he implied I should ‘get a manicure and buy a bra.’ Wow. That's a homophobe badly in need of some education. I'm all for manicures, don't wear a bra. Would guess most gay dudes don't. But it's telling that Nathan can reduce a group of people to a mean-spirited cliché, in a time where young gay men are killing themselves all over the country because of hatred like this.

That said, I would love to sit down with Nathan or any member of Kings and Leon, and tell them how on Glee we actually love their music, and support their artistry…but cannot condone or even laugh at their clear disdain of gay people. "

Wow. It really has gotten out of hand. I could imagine it getting even worse if Slash responds to RM's insults. RM really need to keep his ego in check. He really is just making it easier for the Glee haters out there to hate it even more. I mean any artist really has a right to say no. It is their music and saying no does not mean that they don't support arts education. I mean even I as a fan believe that the show may have started out that way (heart is arts education) but from the looks of things it has turned into a cash cow for Fox and RM. They might see it as Fox and others are just out to make money with their music.

ia. I certainly won't blame artists for saying no anymore.

I think they all come off as a bunch of asshats in this situation. RM, KOL, Slash ... they're all acting too cool for school. The fact that Ryan Freaking Murphy tried to play the "but think of the children" card is hilarious. KOL and Slash thinking they're too good for Glee is nearly as funny.

It's like reading a typical comment war over at ONTD. Everyone is fighting to see who's the most butthurt.

Lame.

January 26 2011, 22:22:57 UTC 1 year ago

Ryan shouldn't have responded, but I'm amazed at how people are calling Ryan immature when Nathan said worse things that RM did.

And for the record, I love KOL.

[info]melloslash

January 26 2011, 22:32:58 UTC 1 year ago

Exactly! KOL said pretty harsh things about Glee, and that's ok, they're entitled to their opinion, but so is RM

And then that mysoginistic/homophobic tweet was just the icing on the cake

[info]lordfoldemort

January 26 2011, 22:26:35 UTC 1 year ago

[info]angdiddy

January 26 2011, 22:28:25 UTC 1 year ago

Ryan's just defending his show. KOL made that comment and said they didn't want to sell out, but they let Gossip Girl play their music a couple of years ago, yeah? Their comments were just as egotistical as Ryan's, so I don't get why everyone is like 'omg Ryan stop being a drama queen' when KOL obviously mentioned Glee in the interview to get attention. They could've not said anything.
